What I Learned
I was very surprised to discover that the majority of the "natural" brands sold at the store are owned by Fortune 500 companies who also own brands full of toxic ingredients that are poisoning you. They are trying to straddle the fence. They don't really care about your health. They care about money. Most of these products are also green-washed which means that the label looks like its a natural product and it even says that it is...but if you actually look up in the ingredients on the back, you will still find one or more ingredients that are toxic and should never be in a "natural product". I had even thought that I was going toxin-free when I choose to buy Mrs. Myers and ALL Free & Clear laundry soap...I thought I was choosing better products for my family! But I was actually being duped...
When I found out this list...I was absolutely shocked. I had no idea that:
- Burt's Bees is owned by Clorox.
- Tom's of Maine is owned by Colgate Palmolive.
- The Body Shop is owned by L'Oreal.
- Mrs. Meyers is owned by SC Johnson.
- Seventh Generation is owned by Unilever.
- Honest Company agreed to pay $1.55 million to settle a nationwide class lawsuit claiming it misled buyers about ingredients in its laundry detergent and dish soap. source
- Cascadian Farm is owned by General Mills.
- Lara Bar is owned by General Mills.
- Annie's Homegrown is owned by General Mills.
- Bear Naked is owned by Kellogg's.
- Kashi is owned by Kellogg's.
- Silk is owned by Dean Foods.
- Odwalla is owned by Coco-Cola Company.
- Honest Tea is owned by Coco-Cola Company.
- Naked Juice is owned by PepsiCo.
What this tells me is that these companies just want a piece of the "crunchy" market share but they don't REALLY care what they are putting into their products...because if they REALLY cared about the health of their customers, they wouldn't still be ALSO making money selling things like bleach, soda, and toothpaste with fluoride. Can you do both? Yes. Should you do both? No. You can't straddle the fence and really mean anything you say.
Did you know that any product that contains the ingredient "Fragrance", "Natural Fragrance", or "Parfum" can have ANY ingredients that the manufacture decides to include without having to disclose to you a single one? It's a trade-secret...and under that loop-hole, they can include all kinds of carcinogenic, developmentally toxic, or reproductively harmful chemicals and they can still put on the label that it is natural, plant-based, etc. It is absolutely un-ethical, but that is what our laws allow...and so companies take advantage of that fact. They do not tell you EVERY ingredient in their product. If you want to watch an excellent documentary about this, check out STINK on Netflix. It will blow your mind.
I now refuse to use any product that I cannot find the full ingredients for. It shows a lack of integrity on the part of any company to hide what they are putting into their products, whether it is natural or not!
So I have dumped these brands. And I buy from a family owned business that has ALWAYS been about health and always will be. They tell me EVERY SINGLE INGREDIENT in EVERY SINGLE PRODUCT. And they even let me visit the farms where they grow the plants that they turn into their plant-based products. Not only that, but they support the things I believe in like fighting human trafficking, giving their farmers and workers a living wage, and taking good care of the earth. Now that is a company I can get behind.
Finding Real Toxin-Free Products
When I found out that Young Living had a whole Thieves product line that was ACTUALLY toxin-free...not just fake toxin-free, I knew I had finally found the answer I was looking for. I started with the Thieves dish soap and the Kidscents Bath Gel & Shampoo. Phillip loved the dish soap and he was finally able to help washes dishes for me again!
It took me about 9 months to slowly switch and ditch things over to Young Living. Baby steps is all it takes friends! Thankfully, Young Living has over 750 products so it is super easy to go toxin-free and I just got everything I needed delivered right to my doorstep. No more having to go down that awful grocery aisle for laundry soap or cleaner! Plus, Young Living paid me 20% back on everything I bought...not even Target's cash back is that good. Best thing EVER!
What happened next truly changed our lives.
If you had told me we would see a dramatic change...I probably would not have believed you.
