In this world of unknowns, having multiple streams of income is the best plan you can have for financial success and stability and owning your own business is a great way to increase your income! However, as the owner of a number of small businesses in the past, I can give you one very important tip: stop trading your time for money. We all have a limited amount of time: 24 hours in a day, 7 days a week. If we trade our time for money, we will always have a ceiling on our income because we have a ceiling on our time. You will only be able to make so much money because you only have so much time. I wish that all that time I had spent growing my multiple businesses had been spent in building a residual income stream instead. Let me tell you why.
At the age of 16, I started a successful sewing business. But when I was 21, I decided to close up shop. I was losing my love for sewing because almost all the jobs that I was paid for were mending and alterations jobs and I wasn't getting paid nearly what I was worth. So I moved on and I started another business where I could actually make more money...selling CUTCO knives... and I loved it.
During this time, I met the love of my life...Phillip Nelson, a friend from high-school who was just out of the marine corp. After 6 months of dating, we eloped and ended up moved into his parent's unfinished basement with $20,000 in debt. We decided to forego our honeymoon to save money and wait until we had the debt paid off first... To say our married life didn't start out very ostentatiously would be an understatement! LOL
A year and a half later, we were able to rent our first apartment in Loveland, CO. While we were renting, I sold CUTCO knives and I was even asked to be on the Fair & Show Team which was a really big deal because only people at a certain rank could be on it. I could see a future for myself as a CUTCO Professional and the opportunity to make money was quite good. Then I got pregnant. I knew that traveling around to different states to the different fairs and shows wasn't really going to work well the farther along I got in pregnancy and caring all the heavy equipment wasn't going to be safe for me to do. I had to step down from the Fair & Show Team before I had even gotten to do one show.
Nine months into living in our apartment, our first baby girl was born on July 4th...and life would never be the same. I knew that I didn't want to miss any of her special milestones and that I needed to be home with her. I couldn't do CUTCO with a baby even though I could set my own hours because I couldn't afford babysitting and I couldn't take her with me on a CUTCO demonstration because it would not be professional at all. But the minute I stopped doing CUTCO demos was the minute I stopped being paid.
My husband was stuck in a dead-end job as a FedEx delivery driver...he decided he wanted to go into the electrician field as an apprentice which meant a big paycut at first but we knew that over time, he would be able to do far more being an electrician than being a delivery driver. But we still needed a side-income...I took up teaching people piano lessons and I could take my baby with me to lessons so that was working out. But I didn't feel like I was doing what I was meant to do...I didn't feel like I had a purpose besides bringing in a few extra hundred dollars a month.
During the time I was pregnant and after my daughter was born, I was working toward my bachelor degree in Business Administration with a focus on Entrepreneurship...I learned all the things...how to write a business plan, how to do accounting, how to do marketing... The funny thing was that after I learned all the behind-the-scenes details and finances of running a brick and mortar business, it was actually the very last thing I ever wanted to do. The idea of taking out a loan for thousands of dollars and then not being able to pay it back for 3-5 years was extremely stressful to me. I wanted an opportunity to actually make a lot of money without having to go into debt for thousands of dollars first...but I had no idea that such an opportunity even existed.
It is crazy to me that I went through an entire college education on business with not one single mention of a completely legitimate way to make an income without needing a college education, without needing thousands of dollars, and without needing to invest in an inventory. When I found out about Young Living, all the dots connected for me.
A friend of mine sent me this little book called the "Your Gameplan: Build a Life Beyond Survival Mode"! When I read it, I knew it was the answer to financial freedom that we had been looking for. The numbers were real and I knew that with consistency and perseverance, I could help my family find financial freedom. I could actually work my entire business from home...I could set my own hours and if I wanted to do an event outside the home, I could plan it when my husband could be home with my girls. I had a purpose in sharing Young Living that was far more fulfilling than sewing, or CUTCO, or piano lessons had ever been...I was making a difference for people in their health. I didn't need to buy any inventory...all the products I bought were things I wanted to use for my family. If I needed to take time off because I had another baby or I needed some family time, I would still get paid...even if I took off an entire month!
It was amazing to still get a paycheck the month that my third daughter was born without doing anything to build my business! This is the beauty of a residual income and that is why I love working with Young Living. Because I love people, I love to talk with people, and I love to help people. And Young Living simply pays me the money that they aren't paying a big advertising firm for TV ads, huge billboards, or online advertising campaigns. Instead they pay the people who already love their products and are sharing them anyway...it's AWESOME!
And it means that the average person finally has the opportunity for a more than average paycheck...that is in fact part of the Young Living mission: Wellness, Purpose, & Abundance. They want to see you be successful and change your family's life with an amazing income.
I absolutely love what I do and every day I wake up with purpose and vision. This job is the only job I've ever had that has truly shaped the person I am...because when I grow as a person, I have a better opportunity to help others. It truly has changed my life. And I promise...it can change yours too.
