The second step to decluttering your home is picking an area to declutter.
Now, before you just jump in and declutter that junk drawer, you need a plan of attack.
I recommend starting with the smallest rooms in your home and also breaking down that room by type of item. If the same kind of item is in other places in your home, you will need to include that as well. I'll explain why in a minute.
The key is a small room so you can feel accomplished and ready to take on a bigger task instead of being bogged down with your very first room. My top choices are bathrooms, closets, or laundry rooms.
So for the sake of an example, let's say you pick to declutter your closet. You are actually going to declutter all of YOUR clothes...not your kids clothes, or your husband's clothes yet...just pick yours. Empty out all of YOUR clothes from the closet and your drawers onto your bed and also go around the house to find your coats, jackets, and any other random clothing items that might be around your home.
Yes, you will be making a mess...but I promise this step is VERY IMPORTANT. You need to actually see all the things you own in that category so you know how much you really need to keep. So whether you are organizing your bathroom, closet, or laundry room, make sure that you are taking EVERYTHING out of the drawers and cupboards and putting those things somewhere else to look through.
In a later post, I will teach you how to create a capsule wardrobe...I promise you that it will entirely change how you view your closet and also help you save money!
