All About Enzymes
In a nutshell, enzymes help you pull the nutrients out of what you’re eating and naturally digest the food in your gut. Without enzymes, you would cease to function! Enzymes are catalysts that cause a chemical reaction to happen faster - like digestion! They are composed of amino acids and they are not alive nor are they living cells. They are sensitive to their surroundings and can become inactive or denatured.

Digestive enzymes perform many functions. They:
  • Break down proteins, fats, and carbohydrates to avoid fermentation in the gut.
  • Aid in proper digestion.
  • Replenish and preserve pools of other enzymes that perform countless metabolic functions in the body not associated with digestion.
There are three ways your digestive system receives enzymes.
1.) Naturally through your food or
2.) produced in your digestive organs
3.) or from supplementation.

Here are the four different digestive enzymes and what they do:
  • Protease - breaks down animal and plant based proteins
  • Lipase - breaks down lipids, also called fats
  • Amylase - breaks down carbohydrates, such as bread, pasta, rice and starchy vegetables.
  • Cellulase - technically a form of amylase, breaks down cellulose or the fiber in vegetables

Enzyme Deficiencies
The following symptoms may suggest an enzyme deficiency: allergies, fatigue, bloating, gas, constipation, indigestion, irregular bowel movements, extreme mood swings after eating processed foods and sugars, nausea, and burping after eating greasy foods.

“Enzymes are key in the process of healing your gut because without them, you’re getting a fraction of the nutrients in your food that your body needs to heal and support itself. You cannot build a house without wood and tools. You cannot have a body that works without enzymes. They are the tools to build the house.” Sarah Harnish, Scriptbook pg 267

Problems digesting food can cause the endocrine system to be overworked, leading to health concerns such as hypoglycemia, diabetes, and obesity. This can lead to over stimulation of digestive organs demanding more food than necessary that may lead to weight imbalances. Eating more raw foods, which contain a rich supply of enzymes, takes stress off the endocrine glands.

Causes of Enzyme Depletion
“You have enzymes in your gut; but as you age, they get depleted or are damaged. This can cause DNA damage, making you age faster, and leading to chronic disease as the body can no longer keep up. The average 40-year-old is absorbing a fraction of what they were at age 20 because nutrient absorption declines with age. To compensate, your body must work overtime to produce enzymes. If you feel sluggish after a meal, it’s because your body is pooling all of its resources just to break down your food, and not into producing the hormones that give you energy. When your body works overtime to properly digest your food, it does not have the energy to devote to other functions, like immune defense. When food is properly digested, fewer digestive imbalances occur.” - Sarah Harnish, Scriptbook pg. 267

Causes of Enzyme Depletion:
  • Cooking at high temperatures (above 105 degrees) which denatures most enzymes.
  • Chemicals, pesticides, and herbicides that work by destroying enzymes in both plants and animals.
  • Genetically engineered foods, which have few enzymes or none at all.
  • Pasteurization or the heating of fruits, vegetables, and dairy products to reduce potentially harmful bacteria.
  • Irradiated food or exposing fresh foods, including meats, to radiation to reduce potentially harmful pathogens.
  • Microwaving, which uses directed microwaves to alter food molecules. Microwaving your food kills all enzymes in your food.
  • Bovine growth hormones that are used in the dairy industry to cause cows to produce more milk.
  • Fluoridated water, when fluoride is added to water to potentially fight tooth decay.
